Indiana coach Tom Allen offered an encouraging statement on Thursday about the status of starting quarterback Michael Penix.
Penix missed the final two games of last season due to an ACL injury. Allen says that Penix is making strides with the injury and he expects him to be on the field for Indiana’s season opener.
On Michael Penix, Allen says he’s “constantly progressing.”
“We feel really good about where he is. Does he need to continue (getting better)? Yes. It’s a process.”
Basically, Penix is firmly on the path mapped out for him months ago — everything but scrimmage periods. #iufb

Money quote on Penix: “I expect him to be our starter on Sept. 4.” So again, right on track. #iufb

If that’s the case, that’s great news for Indiana. After a strong season in which he amassed 1,645 yards and 14 touchdowns with only four interceptions, Penix was a second-team All-B1G selection and is on this year’s Davey O’Brien Award watchlist.
Indiana opens the 2021 season on Sept. 4 at host Iowa (3:30 p.m. EST/BTN).
