Tom Allen knew the defense was not up to par during Indiana’s 2-10 record in the 2021 season. To begin the 2022 season, he took over defensive playcalling duties and is trying to get the unit back up to snuff.

In Week 1, the early results were phenomenal. The Hoosiers forced 4 turnovers, including 3 fumble recoveries and a key fourth-quarter interception of Illinois QB Tommy DeVito.

On Monday, Allen addressed that performance, noting it’s good to see the unit getting “back where we need to be.”

DC Chad Wilt also addressed the unit, saying they’re a defense that wants to be aggressive and take some chances.

In 2021, Indiana averaged less than a takeaway per game and lost the turnover battle. During the 2020 season, the Hoosiers averaged 2.5 takeaways and were one of the most productive units in the B1G.

Hopefully, the defense continues to take steps forward this season.
