Indiana has a starting quarterback, but fans will have to wait to learn who’s QB1.

Hoosiers head coach Tom Allen told reporters Tuesday that he has made a decision on the quarterback competition. He won’t make the decision public, however, until kickoff against Illinois.

The competition has primarily been between transfer Connor Bazelak and returning senior Jack Tuttle. Dexter Williams has also been praised for his recent performances.

Bazelak was a multi-year starter at Mizzou. Tuttle, a redshirt senior, has played in 14 total games over 3 seasons with the Hoosiers, making a handful of starts. Williams redshirted in 2020 and then missed the 2021 season due to a spring injury.

Allen said it was a close competition, but there was a strong consensus among staffers.

It’s no surprise that Allen isn’t making a public announcement. The Hoosiers have clung to secrecy throughout fall camp. Offensive coordinator Walt Bell explained Allen’s plan when meeting with reporters earlier this month:

“As little as we can possibly let Illinois know, is probably a good thing for us. We’ve got to protect the organization and make sure we’re putting our team in the best position to win the game that’s possible.

“We’re gonna be really quiet. We’re just gonna work on us. … The first play against Illinois, there will be 11 people, there will be somebody catching the snap – we’re gonna go play. … We don’t have to worry about any outside things. We don’t have to worry about anything else. That’s Coach (Tom) Allen’s plan. That’s what he wants for the organization. We’re going to keep this thing very close to the vest and get ready to go play our best football.”

Indiana hosts Illinois on Sept. 2, a Friday game.
