Indiana is moving on.

Tuesday night’s game wasn’t the prettiest Indiana has played, particularly on the offensive end, but the Hoosiers did enough to score a 66-58 victory over Wyoming in the First Four round of the NCAA Tournament. Trayce Jackson-Davis and Jordan Geronimo did a lot of the heavy lifting.

Jackson-Davis finished the game with a double-double, scoring a game-high 29 points and collecting 10 rebounds. Jordan Geronimo came in off the bench to score 15 points and grabbed 7 boards. Guard Xavier Johnson ended the night with 10 points, 7 assists and 4 rebounds.

Both teams showed signs of March Madness jitters early in the game. Through the first 13 minutes, the game was knotted at 13-13 in an early rock fight. After trailing 21-17 with 3:41 to play in the opening half, Indiana found a spark and finished the half on a 13-4 run to take a 30-25 advantage over Wyoming.

The Hoosiers and Cowboys continued to trade blows in the second half, but Jackson-Davis’s interior presence and Geronimo’s ability to get second-chance points proved to be the difference.

Indiana’s greatest momentum-builder came just under 13 minutes to play, when Geronimo buried a corner 3-pointer on an assist from Johnson to put IU ahead 43-37. After a missed layup by Wyoming’s Hunter Maldonado, Trey Galloway was able to race to the other end for a layup to put the Hoosiers ahead by 8 points.

Wyoming wouldn’t go away, but that 8-point advantage proved to be too much to overcome.

While Wyoming shot a better percentage (43.5) from the floor than Indiana (41.9), turnovers proved to be the difference. The Cowboys had 18 turnovers compared to the Hoosiers’ 8.

Aside from Jackson-Davis, Geronimo and Johnson, no IU player scored more than 4 points. For Wyoming, Maldonado and Graham Ike combined for 38 of the team’s 58 points.

Indiana will advance to play St. Mary’s in the Round of 64 on Thursday. It’s the Hoosiers’ first win (and appearance) in the NCAA Tournament since 2016.
