Adam Mazur made a bit of history for Iowa baseball Sunday night after being selected by the San Diego Padres in the 2022 MLB Draft. Previously rated the No. 59 overall prospect available in the draft, the Padres tabbed Mazur with the 53rd pick of the draft.

According to Dargan Southard with Hawk Central, Mazur becomes the highest Hawkeye selected in the MLB Draft since 1990. That year, it was Tim Costo who was selected with the 8th overall pick of the draft.

After transferring into Iowa from South Dakota State, Mazur captured the 2022 B1G’s Pitcher of the Year Award. He went 7-3 (15 starts) with a 3.07 ERA in over 93 innings pitched. Mazur also recorded 98 strikeouts while becoming an All-B1G selection.

It will be interesting to see how his career shapes up with the Padres.
