Anterio Thompson and the Hawkeye special teams unit came up with a clutch play in the second half of Week 3. With Iowa clinging to a 14-10 lead over Western Michigan, the defense forced the Broncos into a punt from deep in their own territory.

On the ensuing rush, Thompson was able to break through and deliver the block. Thompson’s block was so emphatic that the ball bounced all the way past the back line of the end zone for a safety.

As a part of the safety, Iowa received an extra possession. That possession produced the most effective offensive drive all afternoon.

The Hawkeyes covered 53 yards on 6 plays to find the end zone, leaning on Kamari Moulton to cover 35 yards and score the touchdown. Iowa would also call a 2-point conversion, a play that was converted by Cade McNamara finding Erick All.

A lot has been made of Brian Ferentz’s amended contract and the points per game requirement for the Hawkeyes this fall. What hasn’t changed is Iowa’s ability to find ways to score points on defense and special teams in pursuit of that goal.
