Brian Ferentz know the task at hand to keep his job, but Iowa’s offensive coordinator is at peace with the arrangement.

Last season, Iowa floundered offensively to rank second to last in the nation in yards per game (251.6) and No. 123 in points per game (17.7).

Now, Ferentz’s contract has been altered to the extent that if Iowa doesn’t average 25 points per game and win at least 7 games, his time at the program will conclude by June 30, 2024.

So far, No. 25 Iowa is averaging 22 points per game with a 2-0 record. Yet Ferentz expressed to ESPN that he’s not going to stress elements that are out of his control.

“It’s like mortality, right? We’re all going to die. Most people haven’t fully contemplated that. I’m still working on it,” Ferentz said. “But in coaching, you have to face that at some point, too, and the sooner you do, the better off you are. Just accept that you’re mortal, and that’s totally out of your control.”

Ferentz is remaining optimistic despite the clock ticking. Despite scoring only 20 points and just one offensive touchdown, Iowa reclaimed the Cy-Hawk trophy in the Week 2 victory vs. Iowa State.

“So let’s turn the focus to what I can control, where we can make improvements, and what can I do to be better,” Ferentz said. “The reality is, that’s the same process, whether you have a great year or whether you have a bad year, whether you’re happy or unhappy.”

Ferentz and Iowa will aim for a 3-0 start as well as improved offensive play when they host Western Michigan on Sept. 16 (3:30 p.m. EST/Big Ten Network).
