Cade McNamara went down with an injury during Iowa’s Saturday scrimmage. Fortunately, it looks like McNamara evaded a serious setback.

Speaking with the media after the scrimmage, head coach Kirk Ferentz said the injury to McNamara is muscle related and not to the quarterback’s knee. That is at least a promising update with McNamara avoiding an issue related to the knee he had surgery on last season.

“Sounds like it’s a muscle, a muscle issue,” said Ferentz via Tyler Tachman. “It’s unfortunate obviously. He needs work like everybody out here needs work, but hopefully nothing too serious.”

McNamara’s injury occurred as he scrambled out of the pocket. He went down in what appeared to be a non-contact situation before immediately removing himself from the practice and heading to the locker room.

McNamara has been Iowa’s starting QB throughout the offseason and is expected to play a major role this fall. The position is also starting to get a little thin with Ferentz confirming a soft tissue injury for Joe Labas Friday that has him sidelined for a bit.

Deacon Hill will likely get a shot for some extra practice reps these next few days, but the obvious hope is that McNamara is back to full speed quickly. The outlook for the Hawkeyes would dramatically shift if the former Wolverine is sidelined for an extended period of time.
