Caitlin Clark was already a legend at Iowa, and now her No. 22 jersey resides in the rafters of Carver-Hawkeye Arena after Sunday’s emotional ceremony.

It was a memorable day for Iowa women’s basketball. First, the Hawkeyes got their biggest victory of the season, knocking off then-No. 4 USC, 76-69, before a rocking home crowd. Then, if it was possible to top that, well, Clark’s jersey retirement ceremony was the perfect headliner after the current team provided the appetizer.

During her iconic career at Iowa from 2020-24, Clark became the leading scorer in NCAA Division I history with 3,951 points, led the Hawkeyes to 2 national championship games, won 3 Big Ten tournament titles and transcended the sport so much that her arrival in the WNBA with the Indiana Fever has been met with attention hardly seen before in women’s sports.

Clark won WNBA Rookie of the Year in 2024 with the Fever and was an All-WNBA first-team selection.

On Sunday, she returned to her old stomping grounds, the place where she made a lot of history and became the current face of women’s basketball.

During Sunday’s game, Clark sat in the stands with her parents, 2 brothers and boyfriend, former Iowa men’s player Connor McCaffery. And then after the game, the show was Clark’s once again, just with a microphone in her hand instead of a basketball.
