Charlie Jones provides early jolt to Iowa with 100-yard kickoff return
Iowa started off looking sluggish vs. Illinois, but Charlie Jones just provided a big-time spark for the Hawkeyes on special teams.
Illinois started the game with a nice sustained drive for a touchdown. Brandon Peters went 6-for-7 as the Illini were efficient in getting the score. A muffed punt snap set Illinois up for a field goal and an early 10-0 lead in Kinnick Stadium.
That is when Jones electrified the Hawkeyes – and the senior day crowd – with a huge return. He caught the ball next to the pylon on the goal line and cut back across the field and into the open.
His blocking provided enough of a crease to get to the sideline, and he was gone. It goes down as the longest kickoff return in school history at 100 yards and made it 10-7 after the slow start:
