Diante Vines and Iowa’s offense are gearing up for playing in the Music City Bowl with quarterback Joey Labas. So far, all signs of Labas appear to be positive.
On Thursday, Vines discussed what he has seen from the redshirt freshman QB in practice. According to the wide receiver, Labas has been “making some great throws” that make the Hawkeyes take notice.
Vines also praised Labas’ command of the offense and his mobility outside of the pocket in practices:
Iowa WR Diante Vines on Joe Labas: “He’s making some great throws that kind of make you stand back for a second and think, ‘Wow. He could be something pretty good.’ He’s just commanding the offense really well. And he’s pretty mobile, so he helps us in that department as well.”

As for Labas, he’s a 6-foot-4 redshirt freshman that came to the Hawkeyes as a 3-star prospect out of Ohio in the 2021 recruiting class. He’ll be making his first career start in the game against Kentucky.
With Spencer Petras graduating and Alex Padilla transferring, Iowa went to the transfer portal and landed former Michigan QB Cade McNamara. While McNamara is expected to complete his rehab in time for spring ball and is expected to be the 2023 starter, Labas could make things interesting with a strong bowl game and spring showing.
