At the end of the first quarter at every Iowa Hawkeyes home football game, fans, players and coaches all stop what they’re doing and wave.
They wave to the University of Iowa’s Stead Family Children’s Hospital that overlooks Kinnick Stadium. The tradition started in 2017, and it’s the best tradition in sports. It’s an awesome experience for all involved.

This postseason, when Iowa plays USC in San Diego, Calif. for the Holiday Bowl on Dec. 27, the tradition will live on:
Fans at the Holiday Bowl between Iowa and Southern California will be asked to do the “Iowa Wave” directed at patients in a children’s hospital in Iowa City as well as representatives from two children’s hospitals in Southern California. https://t.co/Pi4GhAxIY8

Again, this is awesome for all involved. For those going to the game in California to continue the tradition is just an excellent gesture.
It shows that sports is about more than just winning and losing. It’s about the difference that can be made in the world. And this tradition makes a difference.
From Holiday Bowl CEO Mark Neville:
“I’ve been to a lot of college football games all around the country in my nearly 30 years with the bowl game,” he said. “Without question, the Wave at Kinnick Stadium was the most incredible thing I’ve ever experienced at a game. I’m so grateful that our fans attending next week’s Holiday Bowl will get to participate in college football’s best and most moving tradition. This might very well end up being the coolest moment in our bowl game’s history.”
