Former Iowa running back killed in vehicle accident at age 24

Former Iowa running back Derrick Mitchell Jr. has died as a result of injuries sustained during a vehicle accident over the weekend. The University of Iowa announced Mitchell passed away on Monday. He was 24.
Mitchell was a member of Iowa’s football team from 2014-16. He left the program before the 2017 season and intended to play one season at Texas Tech as a graduate transfer. He instead decided to conclude his career at Incarnate Word.
Mitchell ran for 601 yards and five touchdowns for Incarnate Word.
Head coach Kirk Ferentz offered his condolences to Mitchell’s family during his press conference on Tuesday.
“All of us are very sorry to hear about Derrick Mitchell,” Ferentz said. “He was involved in an accident on Friday morning. I know it was a tough circumstance. It’s just a very tough thing. Way, way too young for something like that to happen. Our feelings and condolences certainly with his entire family.”
In three seasons with the Hawkeyes, Mitchell accounted for 339 total yards and three touchdowns.
There were no specific details about the nature of the car accident at the time of this story.
