Gary Barta is moving on from Iowa.

Multiple reports, including from ESPN’s Pete Thamel, suggested that Barta is set to retire.

Barta has been Iowa’s athletics director since August 2006. The Hawkeyes have enjoyed consistent success under his leadership, including 4 NCAA championships, 27 B1G team titles and nearly 500 All-America honorees.

Barta recently completed a 3-year stint as a member of the College Football Playoff Selection Committee, including as chair in 2020 and 2021.

Barta has also dealt with a multiple discrimination lawsuits, and Barta recently drew the ire of taxpayers when he raised the idea of paying for a racial discrimination case with public funds.

Earlier this year, Barta also faced criticism for reworking the contract of embattled offensive coordinator Brian Ferentz that saw Ferentz’ salary reduced to $850,000 this season. He will also have specific performance objectives that he will have to meet. Those include averaging 25 points per game and Iowa will need to win 7 games.
