Gary Danielson called out for misunderstanding basic rule during Week 2
Gary Danielson has been around college football for a long time. But even the longtime broadcaster can have issues keeping some of the rules straight.
That happened during Saturday’s Week 2 broadcast of the Iowa vs. Iowa State Cy-Hawk rivalry. Danielson and Brad Nessler are on the call for CBS, and it is a first half of action that has been dominated by the Hawkeyes.
However, one moment of the broadcast stood out to many fans on social media in particular. It happened on an innocent incomplete pass from Iowa quarterback Cade McNamara.
On the play, McNamara rolled out to the right in a designed bootleg. There was no receiver around and the defense was bearing down, so McNamara made the wise call in pitching it well out of bounds.
Danielson was left stunned on the broadcast while wondering no flag was thrown for intentional grounding. He eventually admitted it looked like McNamara was going to be okay without a flag, but his initial bewilderment to the play left some quizzical fans, especially with McNamara rolling well outside the pocket.
Here is how social media reacted to Danielson’s bizarre call of the normal play:
Gary Danielson forgot that intentional grounding can’t happen outside the pocket.
Enjoy, B1G fans!

Cade McNamara: (does everything you’re supposed to do to avoid intentional grounding)
Gary Danielson, CBS: “THAT’S GONNA BE INTENTIONAL GROUNDING, SO HELP ME GOD!” #Hawkeyes
