Iowa is taking a 42-31 lead over No. 15-seed Grand Canyon on Saturday evening.
This is a great start for the Hawkeyes, especially when considering Luka Garza ran into foul trouble in the first half.
Garza played just 13 minutes in the opening stanza, scoring eight points on 3-of-7 shooting. He also totaled six rebounds, two steals and two fouls.
Joe Wieskamp led the Hawkeyes in scoring with 11 points on 3-of-4 shooting.
As a team, Iowa was excellent offensively. The Hawkeyes shot 55.2 percent from the field and 46.2 percent from the 3-point line. They also made four of seven attempts from the free throw line.
Defensively, Iowa limited Grand Canyon to 40 percent from the field and 23.1 percent from the 3-point line.
If the Hawkeyes can finish off this win, they will face Oregon in the second round. The NCAA declared the Ducks’ first round game vs. Virginia Commonwealth a “no contest” due to COVID-19 issues at VCU.
That second round game would take place on Monday.
