Iowa offensive lineman Tristan Wirfs will miss the Hawkeyes’ season opener against Northern Illinois, according to a statement on Tuesday.

Wirfs will serve a one-game suspension following his arrest for driving under the influence. He was arrested over the weekend.

Head coach Kirk Ferentz issued a statement addressing the situation.

“Consistent with out team policy, Tristan Wirfs will serve a one-game suspension for his arrest for driving under the influence,” the statement read. “It is always disappointing when student-athletes make decisions that are against the law/or are inconsistent with the University of Iowa’s code of conduct or team policies.”

Wirfs played in 10 games for the Hawkeyes as a freshman last season and started the final eight.

Iowa opens the season against Northern Illinois at Kinnick Stadium on Sept. 1.
