Right before the weekend, the College Football Playoff selection committee saw a change among members, when Ohio State Athletic Director Gene Smith announced he was stepping down from his position. That pushed Iowa AD Gary Barta into the role.

Barta will begin a three-year term as a member of the selection committee this spring. He knows this will present a new challenge in his career.

“It’ll be a lot of work,” Barta said on Sunday, according to Hawk Central. “I now have the opportunity to tell my wife that I have to watch more football.”

The College Football Playoff selection committee is made up of 13 members which includes athletic directors, former players and former coaches, among others.

Barta also understands that, should Iowa compete in the B1G Championship Game, he’ll have to watch from a television rather than making the trip to Indianapolis. It’s a sacrifice he’s absolutely willing to make.

“I understand the commitment. That goes back to Kirk’s leadership and longevity and experience (in football). Barbara Burke, as deputy AD, works directly with football. We have a great senior staff,” Barta said. “I understand that if we had that opportunity, not only will I not be at that game, I’d love the opportunity to recuse myself in a meeting if it came to that.”

The B1G has been kept out of the last two College Football Playoffs and the conference champion has been omitted from the last three.
