Akrum Wadley got some needed help.

Iowa’s backfield added some more experience and production on Tuesday with the news that Nevada tailback James Butler would be joining the Hawkeyes as a graduate transfer.

Butler made that announcement on Twitter:

Butler will be eligible to play immediately as a graduate transfer. That’s good news for the Hawkeyes, who will welcome the 5-9 senior with open arms after he rushed for 1,336 yards and 12 touchdowns in 2016.

In each of the last two seasons, Butler racked up at least 1,300 rushing yards and 10 touchdowns. He had 3,316 yards and 27 touchdowns in three seasons with the Wolfpack.

In addition to his productive marks as a rusher, Butler also caught 37 passes for 381 yards and three touchdowns as a junior. The Bloomingdale, Ill. native was already a preseason first-team All-Mountain West Conference selection from Athlon Sports.

Oh, and there’s this:

In his only game against a B1G defense, Butler racked up 82 yards from scrimmage and a touchdown against Purdue in 2016.

He figures to provide some needed assistance to Wadley. Besides Wadley, Iowa’s leading returning tailback was sophomore Toks Akinribade, who had 33 rushing yards as a freshman. Veteran running back Derrick Mitchell transferred from Iowa to Texas Tech earlier in the offseason.

The Hawkeyes return the majority of an offensive line that won the Joe Moore Award.

Now, they have the rare distinction of returning multiple 1,000-yard rushers.
