Rare it is to see graduate transfers in late July.

By now, most players have been enrolled and working out for their respective college teams. Media days are already in the books and fall camp is upon us.

But when you’re in a spot like Iowa, you call for help in the 11th hour.

According to a report from The Albuquerque Journal, New Mexico receiver Matt Quarells will transfer to Iowa and enroll as a graduate student. That will make the wideout eligible to play immediately in 2017, which would help the Hawkeyes’ thin receiver situation.

Since the 6-1 Quarells graduated in three years and redshirted one of them, he’ll have two seasons of eligibility remaining with Iowa.

“He’s a great kid, and I hate to lose him,” New Mexico coach Bob Davie said via the Albuquerque Journal. “But I think Iowa’s a good fit for him.”

In 2016, Quarells had 11 catches for 180 yards and a touchdown. He, however, played in a pistol-option offense that only completed 96 passes all season.

Out of high school, the St. Louis native had offers from Power Five schools like Illinois, Indiana, Missouri and Purdue. Quarells will return closer to home, where he’ll have a chance to compete for playing time immediately.

Matt VandeBerg is the only returning receiver on Iowa’s roster that caught at least three passes last year.

Iowa will begin its fall camp on Sunday.
