Former Iowa defensive back and NFL coach Jim Caldwell will be making a return to Kinnick Stadium on Saturday and will serve as the honorary captain as the Hawkeyes take on Maryland.

Caldwell was a member of the program from 1973-1976 and had an incredible career in Iowa City. He registered 132 career tackles and seven interceptions. He still holds the school’s record for blocked kicks in a single season, blocking five attempts as a freshman.

In addition to his contributions as a Hawkeye, Caldwell has been a head coach at the college and professional level. He was at the helm of the Indianapolis Colts from 2009-2011, leading his team to a Super Bowl appearance in his first season.

From 2014-2017, Caldwell served as the head coach of the Detroit Lions, leading them to two playoff appearances in that stretch.

In seven seasons as a head coach at the NFL level, Caldwell compiled a 64-54 overall record.

Prior to earning a job in the professional ranks, Caldwell coached at Wake Forest for eight seasons. During that time, the Demon Deacons were 26-63 and made a bowl appearance in 1999 after finishing the year 7-5. He was the first African-American head coach in the ACC.

According to HawkeyeSports.com, Caldwell will accompany the team captains to midfield for the coin toss. He will also be in the locker room before and after Saturday’s game.
