Iowa announces transfer QB signee Mark Gronowski to be sidelined for spring practices
Iowa has shaken up its quarterback room once again as we prepare for the 2025 season ahead. Unfortunately, one of the newcomers and a potential key piece to the group will not be able to participate in spring practices.
On Friday, head coach Kirk Ferentz released a statement announcing former South Dakota State QB Mark Gronowski will undergo surgery for a common football-related injury. As a result, Gronowski will be out until June at the earliest.
“Mark played last season with a common football-related injury,” said Ferentz. “While he could have continued to play through the injury, Mark is choosing to have a procedure to address the issue, and we support him in his decision. Our sports medicine team thoroughly reviewed his records and has confidence he will be fully rehabbed in time to participate in our summer program. Mark will participate in all non-practice team activities while he recovers.”
That kind of news could spur some flashbacks for fans after Cade McNamara arrived at the program on the heels of a season-ending injury and surgery during his final season at Michigan. Hopefully, Gronowski’s situation is less severe and he’s able to get on the field quickly in order to prepare for the fall.
Gronowski had a stellar career in the FCS while at South Dakota State, leading the program to 49 wins and a pair of national titles. He is a true dual-threat performer with over 10,000 yards passing and over 1,700 yards rushing with 130 total touchdowns.
The QB battle for Iowa football should be wide-open entering spring practices. Brendan Sullivan returns after some flashes as the starter this fall while Gronowski and fellow newcomer Hank Brown (Auburn) will factor into the battle.
Though his experience has been at the FCS level, Gronowski’s skill set and experience are intriguing as a legitimate NFL prospect following his final season of eligibility. We’ll see what he’s able to bring to the Hawkeyes once he gets on the field.
