While Iowa’s defense and special teams are highly efficient, the team will be remembered for this season’s terrible offense performance. After Iowa’s 10-7 loss at home to Iowa State, Iowa became the first FBS/D1-A team since McNeese State in 1979 to score and allow 10 or fewer points in its first two games of the season.

The offense of Iowa accounted for only 150 total yards in its loss to Iowa State with only 58 of them coming from the rushing game. The Hawkeyes only had 11 first downs and were 3-of-11 on third-down attempts.

Iowa’s atrocious offensive performance started in Week 1 in its 7-3 win at home over South Dakota State. Iowa did not score a touchdown in that game, and the win came from a field goal and 2 safeties. Iowa only accounted for 166 total yards in the game against South Dakota State.

McNeese State accounted for an 11-1 record in 1979 with its only loss coming from a 31-7 loss to Syracuse in the Independence Bowl.
