Iowa finished its regular season with a thrilling 31-28 victory over Nebraska, its fourth-straight win over the Cornhuskers. With the win, Iowa finishes 8-4 and now awaits news next week on which bowl game they’ll head off to.

There were a lot of magical moments in the game. Here’s what I liked — and what I didn’t like — about the Hawkeyes win over the Cornhuskers:

What I liked

1. Mehki Sargent has himself a day

Junior college transfer Mehki Sargent has become the go-to guy in the Iowa backfield, and he’s definitely earned it. Saturday, he was exceptional against the so-so Nebraska defense, rushing for 173 yards and a touchdown on 26 carries. Both were season highs for Iowa’s leading rusher. He’s gained 294 yards in just the last two weeks alone. He’s been a bright spot this season, especially lately after working his way up the depth chart.

2. Migeul Recinos has himself a kick

We haven’t talked much about senior kicker Miguel Recinos this season, but he was the hero Saturday when he nailed a 41-yard field goal at the buzzer to give the Hawkeyes their 31-28 win. He’s been really solid as the Hawkeyes’ kicker these past two years, making 26 of 33 field goals and all 88 of his extra points. His final kick in Kinnick Stadium was his biggest ever, so what a way to go out. Nebraska coach Scott Frost called a timeout trying to ice him, but the strategy backfired.  “Frost made a big mistake calling timeout on that one, because it gave me the opportunity to get the guys together,” Recinos said. “I was able to say a few things to them, told them I loved them no matter what.”

3. Hawkeyes play a clean game throughout

You’ve got to love a performance against an arch-rival that includes no turnovers and only two penalties all day long. That’s what the Hawkeyes did in getting a big win over a Nebraska team that’s really been on the come during the second half of the season after that ugly 0-6 start. I loved how the Hawkeyes were so great on third down, too, converting 7 of 13 times — and 2 of 3 times on fourth down. That led to a huge discrepancy in time of possession, with Iowa holding the ball for 34:41 to only 25:19 for Nebraska. That’s ball control in every which way.

What I didn’t like

1. Blowing a 15-point lead in the fourth quarter

The Hawkeyes entered the fourth-quarter with a 28-13 lead, and as good as this defense has been all year, you’d think they would be safe. But Nebraska finished off its first drive of the final quarter with a touchdown and then scored again with 3:22 left and then made the 2-point conversion to tied the game at 28-all. Iowa has a top-10 defense, but this has happened far too often this year. Wisconsin beat them with a late drive, and Purdue did the same. It’s the difference between a good season and a great season.

2. That this season already has come to an end

College football seasons go too fast. These 13 weeks seem to just fly by, and it’s no different with this Iowa team. There were plenty of highs, muted only by a three-game losing streak that could have been completely different. All three games were easily winnable, and it didn’t happen. Still, thanks for a fun journey, Hawkeyes. Enjoy the bowl game.
