Iowa has officially landed another quarterback. Heralded FCS transfer quarterback Mark Gronowksi is now in the fold for the Hawkeyes after departing from South Dakota State.

He was arguably the best FCS player in the transfer portal, showing all of the makings of a quarterback who deserved to play in the FBS during his time with the Jackrabbits.

Gronowski has 1 season of eligibility remaining.

During his 5 years with South Dakota State, the 6-foot-3, 230-pound quarterback led the program to a pair of national titles and tied the FCS record with 49 wins as a starting quarterback. He has also impressed on the stat line, putting up video game numbers with 10,330 passing yards and 93 touchdowns.

Gronowksi presents as a true dual-threat option, posing a legitimate problem to defenses with his mobility, improvisation ability, and athleticism. He has recorded 1,767 rushing yards and 37 touchdowns throughout his career as well.

He won the Walter Payton Award as the top offensive player in the FCS in 2023, when he threw for 3,058 yards and 29 touchdowns on a career-best 68% completion rate. He also added 402 yards on the ground with 8 scores.

Gronowski told ESPN he considered entering the 2025 NFL Draft and had reportedly been extended an invite to the NFL Scouting Combine. The Iowa coaching staff is a large part of what drew the quarterback in, he said.

“It’s a great coaching staff,” Gronowski told ESPN’s Pete Thamel of the Hawkeyes. “With Coach [Tim] Lester being there and being in the NFL last year and bringing an NFL offense to Iowa, it’s a great opportunity to develop as a player, learn an NFL offense, and win a lot of games.”

It will be interesting to watch how Gronowski develops as his career continues, but he should help the Hawkeyes offense upgrade after they finished out the 2024 season ranked No. 72 overall in scoring offense.
