Iowa running back Mekhi Sargent was the star of the offense for Team Aina in Sunday’s Hula Bowl. Despite falling to Team Kai 15-13 at Aloha Stadium, Sargent took home some individual honors.

Sargent was named the Offensive MVP for Team Aina in Sunday’s game. The former Hawkeye totaled 61 yards on 6 carries and also had 1 catch for 18 yards. He posted an average of 11.3 yards per touch in the contest.

One of two touchdowns for Team Aina in Sunday’s game came from a B1G player, but it wasn’t Sargent. Michigan defensive lineman Carlo Kemp recorded a 64-yard pick-six in the 4th quarter for the final score of the game.

Kemp was named the team’s Defensive MVP for the game.

Sargent spent three seasons at Iowa and rushed for 1,740 yards and 20 touchdowns on 354 carries. As the backup behind Tyler Goodson in 2020, Sargent totaled 432 yards and 7 touchdowns on 76 touches.

Iowa closed out the 2020 season with a 6-2 record. Its final two games — a Week 9 matchup vs. Michigan and a bowl game against Missouri — were canceled due to COVID-19 concerns.
