Iowa strikes first during in-state rivalry game against Iowa State
Iowa got to the scoreboard first in Saturday’s in-state rivalry game against the visiting Iowa State Cyclones.
The Hawkeyes wasted little time doing just that as Iowa running back Kaleb Johnson took the ball in for a 27-yard touchdown on the second play of Iowa’s second possession of the contest. Iowa has shown a number of good things early on, including solid blocking on offense, which was especially evident on this possession.
Things only got better for the Hawkeyes from that point as they’ve played complementary football. With just over one minutes remaining in the first quarter, Hawkeyes linebacker Jay Higgins intercepted Cyclones quarterback Rocco Becht, helping pave the way for an Iowa field goal.
This is a refreshing twist for the Iowa fan base, considering how stagnant the team has been especially on the offensive side of the ball over recent history. The Hawkeyes have all the momentum so far but will need to keep it rolling moving forward.
The Hawkeyes currently lead the Cyclones, 10-0 now into the second quarter with all of the momentum. Here’s a look at two of the most important plays from the game so far:
