Iowa has announced that it will make alterations to its traditional helmet for the Holiday Bowl game against USC on December 27 to honor former head coach Hayden Fry and former athletic director Bump Elliott.

On Monday, the University of Iowa announced that the Tigerhawk logo will be removed from both sides of the helmet to honor Fry in the Holiday Bowl. It will be the third time the logo has been removed from the helmet for a game, according to HawkeyeSports.com. They were previously removed on Nov. 2, 1991, a day after six individuals were shot and killed on the University of Iowa campus.

The other time was in 1996 at the Alamo Bowl, when the mother of Iowa linebacker Mark Mitchell was killed in a vehicle accident on her way to San Antonio.

In addition to removing the Tigerhawk, Iowa will have a helmet decal honoring Elliott.

Fry was the head coach at Iowa from 1979-98 and took the Hawkeyes to 14 bowl games. Elliott was the athletic director from 1970-91. Elliott passed away on Dec. 7, 2019 and Fry died 10 days later on Dec. 17.

Both Fry and Elliott are in the College Football Hall of Fame.
