Multiple coaches from around the B1G are giving their thoughts and opinions on the situation that unfolded in Madison following Sunday’s Michigan-Wisconsin game. The postgame incident between Juwan Howard and Greg Gard has been a strong talking point since it happened.

Howard took a swing at a Wisconsin assistant after Sunday’s 77-63 loss, unable with a late timeout called by Gard when the game had been decided. Because of the severity of the situation, McCaffery was asked for his thoughts on the issue.

McCaffery didn’t dive into the specific circumstance, but he did make it clear that he’s not in favor of handshake lines. He believes emotions are too fresh for something to be forced for players and coaches.

“I’ve said publicly before, the handshake line is not something I’m in favor of,” McCaffery said. “Not that I’m not in favor of sportsmanship, clearly I am. But I think it’s a recipe for a problem — it happens all the time.

“The thing I don’t think people realize, there’s a lot of conversation that goes on between the coaches and the players before and after the game. If you wanna give someone a hug, you can. If you wanna spend time with someone, you can. It doesn’t have to be forced. It doesn’t have to be right at that moment. A lot of things happen throughout the course of a game. A lot of intensity, a lot of stuff said.”

Since Sunday’s kerfuffle in Madison, many have called for the end of the handshake line. Is it time to see that tradition eliminated?
