Luka Garza is going to be remembered as one of the best players in Iowa basketball history. On Tuesday night, his legacy will be immortalized in the rafters at Carver-Hawkeye Arena.

Iowa will retire Garza’s No. 55 jersey on Tuesday night as the Hawkeyes host Michigan State. It’s a tremendous honor for Garza, who left the program as the consensus National Player of the Year following an outstanding 2020-21 season.

Prior to tip-off on Tuesday night, Garza met with reporters to talk about the honor. The former All-American is very appreciative of the honor.

“It’s gonna mean everything, an incredible moment. The number obviously means a lot to me and my family. My dad wore that number,” Garza said of his jersey retirement. “I put everything I had into that jersey for four years, so to see that go up in the rafters is something I’m never gonna forget.”

Garza also said he’s excited to get the opportunity to share that moment with the fans on Tuesday night. His senior season was a relatively quiet one in terms of attendance, as the B1G prohibited attendance because of the COVID-19 pandemic.

In four seasons at Iowa, Garza scored 2,306 career points and grabbed 931 rebounds. He averaged 18.2 points and 7.3 rebounds per game for his career with the Hawkeyes.

His final season with the Hawkeyes was last year, averaging 24.1 points, 8.7 rebounds and 1.7 assists per contest. He was named a first-team All-American, a first-team All-B1G, and was the winner of the B1G Player of the Year and National Player of the Year honors.
