Joel Klatt has mixed expectations for Iowa entering the 2023 season after some missed opportunities and a disastrous offense a year ago. Combine that performance with the reworked contract for offensive coordinator Brian Ferentz, and Klatt knows there’s the potential for Iowa to be a mixed bag this year.

“Iowa could be a total fiasco this year with the whole Brian Ferentz has to score 25 points,” said Klatt. “I mean, that’s not fair to Cade McNamara. And yet here they are a defense that’s always good… Here’s Iowa, they’re absolutely gonna be fantastic on defense, we know that. And they should be better on offense.”

At the end of the day, Klatt believes the Hawkeyes should be a team to threaten the top competitors in the B1G. Nevertheless, the 25 points per game mark for Brian Ferentz and the offense could put some undue stress on the program.

“This is a team that should threaten in the B1G. They should. But they’ve got this arbitrary mark of 25 points,” Klatt explained. “You’re telling me that they’re not going to take like ‘Hey, you’re winning every game 21-10’… who cares?”
