Fans were out for blood after Iowa barely made it past South Dakota State by a score of 7-3.

The Hawkeyes failed to score a single touchdown during the game, getting their 7 points from a single field goal and two safeties. Iowa’s defense scored more points than its offense and special teams combined, and the Hawkeyes finished the game with only 166 total yards of offense and averaged just 2.7 yards per play.

Head coach Kirk Ferentz and QB Spencer Petras received heavy backlash on social media, with fans and analysts calling the Iowa offense “feeble” and “anemic”. After two quarters, Petras was just 5-of-12 for 33 yards with 1 pick. Iowa had 56 yards of total offense and 3 points at halftime.

Despite the criticism, Ferentz says the QB plans have not changed. Petras was in a QB battle with Alex Padilla for much of fall camp before being named the starter ahead of Week 1.

Iowa fans are demanding change, but it looks like they may not get it, at least not in Week 2.
