Kirk Ferentz discussed the current state of the transfer portal and college football after being asked about Charlie Jones on Tuesday.

Jones, a former Hawkeye receiver who left the team after spring practice for this weekend’s opponent Purdue, has drastically increased his production on the field.

David Eickholt of 247Sports shared Kirk Ferentz’s thoughts on the situation:

Jones currently has 840 yards and 9 touchdowns on the year for the Boilermakers, which more than doubles his total of 323 yards while at Iowa in 2021.

Ferentz and other head coaches have had the difficult task of navigating the current state of college football. Not only do you have to recruit players, you now have to retain them between seasons.

Ferentz understands that it’s now just part of the job and that it will continue to be normal to play against former teammates even in conference. Iowa will more than likely look into the transfer portal for necessary players and production after this season.

It will be a balancing act for programs to find and keep talent using the portal and Eickholt thinks it’ll be necessary for the Hawkeyes this offseason.
