Earlier this week, Iowa coach Kirk Ferentz announced that senior wide receiver Ihmir Smith-Marsette will be suspended for Iowa’s Nov. 7 game against Michigan State.

Smith-Marsette was arrested for operating a vehicle while under the influence early Sunday morning, just hours after the Hawkeye’s dropped a 21-20 home game against Northwestern. It was reported that Smith-Marsette was driving 74 miles per hour in a 30 miles per hour speed zone.

Ferentz was disappointed in Smith-Marsette’s arrest, noting that he felt it was an uncharacteristic decision on his part. The OWI was the first for Smith-Marsette.

Smith-Marsette will move to the scout team during the week for practices, and Ferentz anticipates he will handle the university protocol well and possibly return to the roster for the next week’s game against Minnesota.

Junior receiver Charlie Jones is expected to replace much of Smith-Marsette’s role.

“Charlie Jones could see some time on offense with Ihmir Smith-Marsette’s suspension,” said Ferentz. “Jones has done a really nice job in the punt return game this season.”
