Kirk Ferentz explains decision to stick with Spencer Petras at QB
Kirk Ferentz has a quarterback dilemma on his hands for all the wrong reasons to begin 2022.
In the Week 1 win, Spencer Petras and the offense were stagnant. Luckily, Iowa was able to avoid those issues behind the strong defense and elite special teams play.
Unfortunately, the Hawkeyes could not outrun the disastrous offense against Iowa State. Petras completed less than 50% off passes for a second straight week and Iowa finished the game with exactly 7 points, though those points did come via a touchdown this time around.
What is questionable for Ferentz’s squad is that Petras is the only player to throw a pass so far in 2022. Backup Alex Padilla has not been utilized or given a shot, something that has confused many people.
After the loss to Iowa State, Ferentz explained his choice to stick with Petras. According to Ferentz, Petras has not been getting enough help from the other pieces of the offense to generate a full review of the offense.
To his credit, Ferentz did say making a change would be considered if it’s what is best for everyone.
Kirk Ferentz on decision to stick with Spencer Petras today: “To me, both these games he’s still not getting enough help to do a fair assessment. He hasn’t been perfect obviously, nobody has. We’ve got a lot of moving parts on offense.”

Kirk Ferentz: It’s not going well for Spencer or anybody on the offense, if making a change is the best thing, then that’s something we will consider.

No decision yet on who will play quarterback for Iowa vs. Nevada, per Kirk Ferentz.
