We’re less than five days from kickoff, and still Iowa hasn’t heard any word on the status of transfer wide receiver Oliver Martin.
During the offseason, Martin — an Iowa City native — transferred back to his hometown after spending two years at Michigan. He applied for an immediate eligibility waiver from the NCAA, but still has not received any word on his status.
The Hawkeyes take the field against Miami (OH) in Week 1 on Saturday, Aug. 31.
On Tuesday, Ferentz spoke with the media about Martin’s potential eligibility and whether or not Hawkeye fans can expect to see him on the field. The head coach said that, if the receiver is granted eligibility, he’ll be on the field for Iowa.
“We hope to hear something this week,” Ferentz said. “If we get the green light, he’ll be in there.”

Martin is a former four-star receiver who slipped away from the Hawkeyes during his initial recruitment. But he made a return home, and he’s back in the good graces in Iowa.
From the sound of it, Martin has done enough in practice to prove that he can be a contributor at receiver for the Hawkeyes early in the year. It all comes down to his eligibility, now. And we all know how that can go with the NCAA involved.
