Kirk Ferentz reportedly meets with former ACC offensive coordinator who has B1G experience
Kirk Ferentz is looking for an offensive coordinator, and has reportedly met with former Duke offensive coordinator/QB coach Kevin Johns on Friday morning.
Scott Dochterman of The Athletic reported that Johns and Ferentz met at a hotel near Iowa’s campus.
Johns has Big Ten experience at Indiana and Northwestern, including as an OC with the Hoosiers from 2011-2016. Overall, he’s been an OC at 5 programs in his career, and he was the passing game coordinator at Northwestern.
Duke’s offense last season was 96th in the country in total offense with 348 yards per game, and the Blue Devils were 68th in scoring offense at 26.9 points per game.
His Duke bio noted that in one season under Johns, the Blue Devils went from last in the ACC in 2021 to 5th, 5th, and 7th in scoring offense, total touchdowns and passing touchdowns, respectively. In addition, Duke improved in pass efficiency (11th in 2021 to 5th in 2022) and total offense (7th in 2021 to 4th in 2022).
Johns graduated from Dayton with a bachelor’s degree in 1998 and a master’s degree from Northwestern in 2001.
Maybe Kirk Ferentz’s meeting with former Duke OC Kevin Johns this morning will finally produce white smoke from Casa Kinnick.
