Kirk Ferentz has been the head coach at Iowa since 1999, entering his 25th season leading the Hawkeyes this fall. Along the way, Ferentz has racked up 186 total wins and 7 seasons of 10+ wins.

Undoubtedly, some of those wins have been more memorable than others. During Tuesday’s press conference, Ferentz also revealed one of his all-time favorite wins while leading the Hawkeyes.

The head coach admitted “maybe I’ll get fired” for his pick, but one of his favorite wins as a head coach was a 6-4 victory over Penn State during the 2004 season. Ferentz also said it was “the best way for Iowa” to get a win that day.

The head coach acknowledged some fans do not always enjoy how Iowa wins but the objective is still to win, regardless of the final score.

The starting quarterback for Iowa in that victory was Drew Tate who completed 14-of-31 passes for 126 yards with an interception. The Hawkeyes also rushed for just 42 yards with 2 total turnovers.

As for the defense, Iowa held Penn State to 96 passing yards and picked off Zack Mills and Michael Robinson for 4 combined interceptions. Kyle Schlicher drilled a pair of field goals to provide Iowa with enough scoring for the now iconic affair. At least it is in Ferentz’s eyes.
