The Hawkeye Wave has become one of college football’s most celebrated new traditions.

At the end of the first quarter, the intensity of the clash on the gridiron takes a pause as fans and players of both teams take time to turn to Kinnick Stadium’s east side and wave to the children and families next door at UI’s Stead Family Children’s Hospital. The hospital’s 12th floor features a “press box” viewing space for patients and their families to watch the games.

When it came time for the Iowa State Fair, Stephanie Reynolds, of Sheldahl, Iowa, decided to make a “Hawkeye Wave” theme cake.

The hospital’s official Twitter account shared a photo of the cake Wednesday.

In the tweet, Reynolds is quoted as saying, “I wanted [the kids at Stead Family Children’s Hospital] to see that every minute of every day we are thinking of them, and that they are not alone.”

You don’t have to be a Hawkeyes fan to appreciate the tribute (and Reynolds’ attention to detail).
