A major defensive prospect in the Class of 2022 is staying home.

Xavier Nwankpa, a 5-star safety from Altoona, Iowa, announced on Wednesday that he intends to sign with the hometown Hawkeyes.

According to the 247Sports Composite, which factors in other recruiting services ratings, Nwankpa is a high 4-star, the top prospect in his state, the No. 5 safety in the country, and the 45th-ranked player overall. By 247’s own ratings, he’s a 5-star, the No. 1 safety, and a top-15 talent. Rivals also lists him as a 5-star prospect.

Either way, it’s another elite defensive back joining the Hawkeye program and defensive backs coach Phil Parker’s room.

At 6-foot-2, 190 pounds, Nwankpa has excellent size. He also competed in track and field in high school, posting a 22-7.75 long jump as a junior. His Hudl tape credits him with 4 interceptions and a pair of forced fumbles.

For the Hawkeyes, he instantly becomes the highest-rated player in their 2022 class, which now stands at 12 known commitments.
