Marshall Meeder was not the field goal kicker for most of Iowa’s regular season. However, he was thrust into the spotlight in the Heroes Game against Nebraska in the biggest moment of his career.

Drew Stevens — Iowa’s traditional field goal kicker — had a pair of field goal tries blocked by the Huskers in Friday’s game. Both were well within Steven’s traditional range. Whether it was related to those blocks or something else, the Hawkeyes turned to Meeder with 4 seconds left on the clock.

With the game tied at 10 apiece, Meeder’s try as time expired sent Iowa to its 10th win of the season:

For much of the final minutes of the fourth quarter, it appeared the two teams were destined for overtime. Deacon Hill and Chubba Purday exchanged interceptions, but a big gain by Leshon Williams set up the game-winning kick.
