Owen Freeman throws major shade at Mackenzie Mgbako following Iowa's dominant win
Owen Freeman delivered a major performance in Iowa’s blowout win over Indiana. Afterward, he delivered a resounding statement at the postgame press conference.
Fans are likely well aware that last year Freeman was the Big Ten’s Co-Freshman of the Year. The player to share that award? Indiana’s Mackenzie Mgbako, though Freeman came out of Saturday’s game with better numbers.
While Payton Sandfort led all players with 23 points, it was Freeman who dazzled with a 16-point, 12-rebound double-double. He rounded out that effort with an impressive defensive effort led by 4 blocks and 3 steals.
Meanwhile, Mgbako struggled with 6 points and 6 rebounds while going 0-for-3 from 3-point range. And Freeman felt those performances in the same game left a statement about the true nature of last year’s award.
“It was never co-Freshman of the Year,” proclaimed Freeman. “I’m just going to make that apparent.”

While Freeman was feeling good after Saturday’s win, Iowa lost the head-to-head matchup with Indiana a season ago in a game that saw Freeman score just 4 points and struggle with foul trouble. The two sides are not slated to face off again in the regular season this year, so we’ll have to see if they potentially face off in the Big Ten Tournament for another installment in this series.
