Iowa won’t just be losing starting quarterback Nate Stanley this offseason, there’s a good chance the Hawkeyes could be losing one of their backups, as well.

On Wednesday morning, ESPN’s Adam Rittenberg reported that Iowa quarterback Peyton Mansell has hit the NCAA transfer portal. He did not appear in any games during the 2019 season after taking snaps in five contests in 2018.

Entering the NCAA transfer portal doesn’t force a player to leave his current institution, but does allow players to explore other opportunities and speak with other coaches across the country. Mansell could still return to Iowa if it’s in his best interest.

Mansell is a former three-star pro-style quarterback who was a member of Iowa’s 2017 recruiting class. As a redshirt freshman in 2018, he appeared in five contests and threw eight passes, completing five for 83 yards. He also rushed eight times for 31 yards and a touchdown.

This season, Mansell wasn’t on the two-deep and was behind Stanley and redshirt freshman Spencer Petras.

Iowa is also bringing in three-star pro-style quarterback Deuce Hogan as a member of the 2020 recruiting class. But after having Stanley run the show for the last three years, the Hawkeyes will be inexperienced under center next fall.
