Report: Iowa to cut 40 positions, implement furloughs and pay reductions

Iowa’s athletic department is being forced to take additionally measures to help offset some of the lost revenue due to the COVID-19 pandemic. The Gazette reported the news on Tuesday.
Per the report, Iowa’s athletic department will either cut or leave vacant 40 positions. All regular, non-contracted employees will also be required to take 15 days of furlough leave prior to Dec. 31, with the exception of senior staff. Non-contract professionals and Professional and Scientific senior staff will take a 5 percent pay cut in salary, as well.
All of these cost-cutting measures come in addition to the other pay cuts that were announced on July 1.
In August, the University of Iowa announced that it would no longer be sponsoring four sports as a result of the pandemic. Those four programs were men’s gymnastics, men’s and women’s swimming and diving and men’s tennis.
According to the report from The Gazette, it’s unclear how many vacancies will go unfilled and how many individuals will be laid off because of the cost-cutting measures. No specifics on that information was known at the time of the report.
