Spencer Petras earns Duke Slater Golden Gavel, praised for high accountability
Spencer Petras, the Iowa QB, was awarded the Duke Slater Golden Gavel Friday morning. The award goes to the player who cooperated the most with local media while also exhibiting professionalism and integrity in their interactions.
“Few athletes have handled themselves with more professionalism in the face of adversity than Spencer Petras,” said Scott Dochterman of The Athletic, who presented the award to Petras. “Spencer set an example of accountability that everyone should emulate, and few ever will attain.”
The award is named after Duke Slater, a member of the College Football Hall of Fame who earned his law degree from Iowa while playing in the NFL.
Petras had a solid season, and passed for for 1,725 yards and 5 touchdowns on the way to a 7-5 season for Iowa. The Hawkeyes will take on Kentucky in the Music City Bowl.
