Petras announced ahead of the Music City Bowl that he would not be playing Iowa football in 2023, citing a lengthy rehab of his shoulder injury. In July, Petra announced that he would be around the program to work as a student assistant coach. He is not listed on the 2023 Iowa football roster.
By not playing in 2023, Petras preserved his eligibility. He played in 30 games for the Hawkeyes over 5 seasons, but the NCAA’s COVID-19 waiver allows him to play a 6th season of college football. Cade McNamara, Iowa’s QB1 to begin the 2023 campaign, confirmed in October that he plans to return to the Hawkeyes in 2024.
Petras compiled 20-11 record as starting QB, per his Iowa bio. He was a sophomore member of the 2020 Leadership Group and on the Player Council as a junior and senior in 2021 and ’22.
Over his 5-season career, Petras threw for 5,199 yards, which ranks 10th at Iowa. Petras’ most productive year was in 2021 when he was 165-of-288 passing for 1,880 yards, 10 touchdowns and 9 interceptions, adding 5 rushing scores.
