Spencer Petras has been Iowa’s starting QB for most of the past two seasons. Despite the Hawkeyes going 16-6 in that span, Petras has struggled with consistency at times.

Last season, Petras completed 57.3% of his passes and had 10 touchdowns to 9 interceptions. That also included a meager 6.5 yards per attempt.

Needless to say, if the offense is going to improve, Petras needs to take a step forward with his accuracy and consistency. To highlight his work, Iowa released a behind-the-scenes video of Petras mic’d up on Tuesday.

While there is not necessarily a guarantee Petras will open the season as the starter, he is likely to land the starting job ahead of Alex Padilla. Petras has the edge in both experience and production to this point.

Fortunately for Petras and the offense, his top target from 2021 returns in Sam LaPorta. Outside of LaPorta, the Hawkeyes will be looking for some young faces to step up into larger roles in 2022.
