Tim Lester, new Iowa OC, speaks to appeal of Hawkeyes' tradition and history, 'excited to get to work'
Tim Lester was officially announced as Iowa’s new offensive coordinator on Wednesday, and he hopes to resuscitate an offense that became a punch line in college football in recent years.
Lester will be only the 4th offensive coordinator under Kirk Ferentz, who is the nation’s longest-tenured coach, and who has never fired a coordinator in his tenure, which began in 1999. Iowa has had Ken O’Keefe, Greg Davis and Brian Ferentz lead the offense.
Lester comes to Iowa City with 22 years of coaching experience, including 12 years as a head coach at the Division I, II and III levels, and 12 years as an offensive coordinator. A native of Wheaton, Illinois, Lester spent last season as a senior analyst for the Green Bay Packers. He was expected to take on a coordinator role at Troy under new coach Gerad Parker, until Iowa came knocking.
“When you have coached at every level of football like I have, you have a true appreciation for an opportunity like this at the University of Iowa,” Lester said in a release by the school. “I know the tradition and history of the Hawkeye program and I am excited to get to work with the outstanding players and coaches.”
