Two more Iowa football players have entered their names in the NCAA transfer portal, making it four Hawkeyes who have decided to explore their options in the last week.

Defensive back DJ Johnson and offensive lineman Ezra Miller have both entered the transfer database. Johnson made his decision on Wednesday evening while Miller announced his choice on Thursday morning.

Johnson was a three-star member of Iowa’s 2018 recruiting class and was a redshirt freshman with the Hawkeyes. Miller is a former four-star offensive lineman who was the team’s second-highest ranked commit in the 2019 cycle.

“I owe no one an explanation but understand PT was far from the issue,” Johnson wrote on Twitter. “I’m a team-first guy wouldn’t leave my team for those type of circumstances.”

Last season, Johnson played in 11 games and made one start. He totaled 14 tackles and two pass break-ups.

Miller had decided to medically retire from football following the 2019 season, but has now decided to enter his name in the portal. On Thursday, the former four-star reruit wrote an emotional message highlighting his battle with mental health.

“It was not due to back issues that I left the program, Iowa simply worked with me to make that the public statement,” Miller wrote. “I left on my own accord due to major depression and anxiety amplified by a series of events. A close friend and mentor passes away from cancer, God bless you Mr. Kwikkel. Shortly after, my father was diagnosed with cancer, and is now thankfully recovering. My brother was in a nasty car accident as well.

“These events combined with the stress provided by school and football led to some very poor self treatment and mental health struggles. After two long hiatuses and intense therapy, I believed the best solution was to leave football, as I did not think I could be a good teammate with all this going on.

“Now I believe, along with my support system, that I am in a state where I can play ball again. And with saying that, I am entering the transfer portal.”

Miller did not play in any games for the Hawkeyes last season.

With Johnson and Miller both hitting the portal this week, Iowa has seen four players now decide to explore their options recently. Running back Samson Evans and offensive lineman Jeff Jenkins have also hit the portal.
