Former Iowa quarterback C.J. Beathard is trying to work his way up the depth chart in San Francisco. In Friday night’s preseason game between the 49ers and Kansas City Chiefs, Beathard made a pretty strong case.

Beathard, who also saw playing time with Matt Barkley, was the only 49ers quarterback to throw a touchdown pass in Friday’s contest. In fact, the former Hawkeye had two scoring strikes, including this 46-yard pass:

Beathard finished the night completing 7-0f-11 passes for 101 yards and two touchdowns. His QB rating was 133.0, the highest for the evening. San Francisco defeated Kansas City 27-17.

At Iowa, Beathard threw for over 5,500 yards while completing 58 percent of his passes. He had 40 touchdown passes with 19 interceptions. His best year came during the Hawkeyes’ 12-0 campaign in 2015. He completed 223-of-362 passes for 2,809 yards and 17 TDs while just tossing five interceptions.

He was drafted in the third round of the NFL Draft and was taken at No. 104 overall.
